Library Budget

I read a great article in the February, 2013 Library Sparks on school library budgets called “My Budget Was Cut: What do I do Now?” by Aileen Kirkham.  The author shared some great ideas and websites that I thought would be great to re-share.  So many of us new to the field would be stumped at trying to make “bricks out of straw” in our future libraries, hence, this is a very useful resource.  Here are some things that she shared:

·         Follett’s Titlewish – www.titlewish.com
·         Funds4Books – www.mackin.com
·         Dollar General  Literacy Foundation – www.dollargeneral.com
·         Junior Library Guild – www.juniorlibraryguild.com
·         TeachingBooks.net – www.teachingbooks.net

Additionally, here are some resources I found helpful:

         Laura Bush Foundation - http://www.laurabushfoundation.com/
·         First Book - http://www.firstbook.org/

·         Capital One and Heart of America Foundation - http://www.heartofamerica.org/our-programs/#tech

  1. I'm not in a library yet, and I already worry about the budget! In many of the libraries I visited during my clinical hours, I was left wondering how they managed with such small budgets, especially when the library was expected to fund school computer programs like Study Island. In my current school, the librarian has teamed up with the reading specialist a few times to write grants to fund author visits. I came across this article as I was researching for the blog.

I have always been intimidated by grant writing but it may not be so painful if you are collaborating with someone!
